ULM baseball earned an 8-5 win over Texas State on March 14, taking the series after a late rally at Lou St. Amant Field.
The game was decided in the bottom of the seventh inning when ULM scored four runs to overcome a one-run deficit. The win brings ULM’s record to 11-9 overall and 2-0 in Sun Belt Conference play, while Texas State falls to 12-6 and 0-2 in conference.
Head coach Ford Pemberton said, “Really proud of the team, players and coaches. It was a good series win.” Dayne Wray hit his seventh home run of the season and Zach White recorded his first career homer. Pemberton praised Wray’s performance, saying, “Dayne Wray just continues to do what he does. He loves the moment.” He also commended White: “Zach’s been doing a really good job. He does all of the things that we ask of him offensively and behind the plate.”
Texas State took an early lead with two runs in the first inning, but ULM responded throughout the game. After tying it up with Wray’s solo home run in the fourth inning, ULM pulled ahead before Texas State regained control briefly in the fifth frame. The decisive seventh inning saw key hits from Blaser and Haggard, as well as a clutch single by Kade Dupont that drove in two more runs for ULM.
Holden Hess pitched four scoreless innings to close out the game and collected his first win of the season with three strikeouts. Pemberton said, “What a job by Hess coming in. That’s exactly what the bullpen needed.” Offensively, Blaser, Wray and White each had multiple hits while Dupont contributed two runs batted in. Mauzy extended his hitting streak to 20 games.
Pemberton concluded: “I tell the guys that we expect to win these games. I thought that our guys really did that tonight.” The Warhawks will play Texas State again tomorrow for the series finale.
