ULM baseball won its first Sun Belt Conference game of the season on March 13, defeating Texas State 12-4 at Lou St. Amant Field.
The victory marks an important start for ULM in conference play, giving the team momentum as they continue their three-game series against Texas State. The Warhawks improved to a 10-9 overall record and 1-0 in the Sun Belt, while Texas State fell to 12-5 and 0-1 in conference.
Jake Haggard and Dayne Wray each hit three-run home runs for ULM, with ten of the team’s twelve runs coming with two outs. Head coach Ford Pemberton said, “That was a big win, we needed that. It was a good Friday night.” Wray also had five runs batted in during the game, while Adam Tubbs earned his second win of the year by pitching 3.2 innings and allowing only one unearned run.
The Warhawks scored in five of eight innings and maintained control throughout most of the contest. After building an early lead, ULM responded to Texas State’s attempts to close the gap with timely hitting and strong relief pitching. Pemberton praised Wray’s performance: “He’s been great and has a really good ability to get the barrel on the ball. It was a good pitch to hit in a clutch moment.” Mauzy led ULM with three hits, while Aranda and Dupont also contributed multiple hits.
Looking ahead, Pemberton said, “We put ourselves in a really good position with the bullpen. We’ve got to show up ready to go tomorrow.” The Warhawks will try to secure a series win when they face Texas State again Saturday night.
