Union Parish Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.
State Archaeologist to Speak in Museum on April 21
Dr. Chip McGimsey, Louisiana state archaeologist, will give a talk in the Union Museum of History and Art on Thursday, April 21, at 5 p.m. He will discuss the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum that were destroyed by the deadly eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly 2000 years ago. This event is part of the continuing series of talks for the D’Arbonne Archaeological Club, and is open to the general public. The club is affiliated with the Union Museum. Admission is free.
Once thriving and sophisticated Roman cities, Pompeii and Herculaneum were buried under meters of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The preserved sites feature excavated ruins of streets and houses that visitors can freely explore
