Congresswoman Julia Letlow has introduced legislation aimed at supporting American agricultural producers who have been affected by global trade market disruptions. The proposed bill seeks to establish a fund, overseen by the Secretary of Agriculture, to provide financial support to American farmers and producers.
The initiative, known as the Tariff Responses and Damages to Exports (TRADE) fund, is designed to allow the Trump Administration to address trade-related agricultural losses more effectively. It proposes that revenue generated from tariffs on foreign agricultural products be allocated directly into a special account. This account would then be used to mitigate the losses experienced by American producers due to these trade challenges.
“As President Trump works to fix unfair trade practices, I’m moving to make sure our farmers receive the support they need,” stated Congresswoman Julia Letlow. “This bill would dedicate money collected from tariffs on foreign ag products to American farmers. Our farmers are the lifeblood of Louisiana and our nation, and I’ll have their back every step of the way as President Trump works to create a level playing field with our trading partners.”
The TRADE fund aims to compensate those in agriculture who are impacted by changes in the market. This includes situations where there is a decrease in exports or an increase in input costs due to tariffs and other barriers imposed by foreign nations.
