“Udie” Herrington is seeking the office of Morehouse Parish District 1 Police Juror during the elections on October 14th and will be confronted with voter concerns over the economy and education if elected. Supporters and endorsers of Herrington’s campaign believe that he is the right candidate to tackle these issues.
An August 2023 KTBS 3 survey of Louisiana likely voters found that low quality of education was one of the two biggest problems facing the state.
The poll also covered economic issues. With regard to how best to grow the economy, 41 percent of respondents said that the key is to improve the business climate by cutting taxes and red tape, while 33 percent said to improve the quality of life and 20 percent said to develop a skilled workforce through technical education.
NE Louisiana News reported that Herrington was recently endorsed by RED PAC, a group dedicated to electing conservatives at the local level. The group’s executive director, Kevin Gardner, praised Herrington’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and local development. These qualities, according to Gardner, make Herrington a top choice to serve the Morehouse Parish community.
According to NE Louisiana News, Charlie Kolean, RED PAC’s chief strategist, added that Herrington would stand firm on his conservative beliefs and would put the interests of the community first.
Morehouse Parish is holding elections on Saturday, October 14. All seven police juror seats will be up for election. Elected police jurors will serve a four-year term before facing re-election. Herrington, a resident of Bonita, is running as a Republican, according to the Secretary of State’s office.
The police jury board operates as both the executive and legislative body of a parish government. According to the Police Jury Association of Louisiana, parish governments are responsible for road and bridge construction and maintenance, drainage, sewerage, solid waste disposal, fire protection, recreations and parks, parish prison construction and maintenance, road lighting and marking, many water works, health units and hospitals, among other duties. They are also in charge of passing ordinances and budget matters for the parish.
