Louisiana Congresswoman Julia Letlow has introduced a bill aimed at supporting American agricultural producers affected by global trade market disruptions. The proposed legislation seeks to establish a fund that would enable the Trump Administration to address trade-related losses efficiently.
“The president would then have the ability to deposit tariff revenues we collect on imported ag product into this account. Then, these funds could then be used to offset losses suffered by American producers due to market changes as a result of the tariffs,” Letlow explained.
Letlow emphasized the necessity of financial assistance for farmers facing revenue declines due to decreased exports, increased input costs, and retaliatory trade barriers from foreign nations. She stated that this initiative would ensure farmers receive necessary support while President Trump addresses unfair trade practices.
“We’re collecting tariffs on goods being brought in from other countries and using those to make our farmers whole,” Letlow added.
The Republican representative of Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District mentioned that her proposal has already garnered backing from the House Agriculture Committee.
“So, everybody seems to be on board. We are working with leadership and hey, who knows, it could come to the floor for a vote,” she remarked.
Letlow noted that there is no specific timeline for when the legislation might be voted on in the House.
