Today, Congresswoman Julia Letlow announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has designated the Ouachita River as a U.S. Marine Highway. This designation aims to enhance economic development in North Louisiana by leveraging the river’s potential for commerce and freight movement.
Letlow had previously advocated for this designation in a letter to DOT Secretary Sean Duffy, emphasizing the river’s ability to facilitate commerce and reduce highway congestion. With this new status, local agencies and industries can now apply for federal infrastructure grants.
“The Ouachita River is a wonderful natural resource with vast economic potential,” said Congresswoman Julia Letlow. “This designation will spur rural economic development and increase opportunities for infrastructure improvements and job creation.”
The United States Marine Highway Program, created by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, administers these designations through the U.S. Maritime Administration. The program provides competitive grants to projects on designated U.S. Marine Highway Routes.
Randy Denmon, President of the Ouachita River Valley Association, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunities this brings: “The designation of the Ouachita River as U.S. Marine Highway M-167 provides opportunities for public and private entities along the Ouachita River eligible to apply for federal grants.”
Brandon Waggoner, Vice President of the association, also commented on its significance: “The Ouachita River brings so much to the people within the Ouachita River Basin and we are excited to announce this major development.”
